The Power Play Interviews: $3 Million in 6 Months for Markus Frind
You will start to see an assortment of Internet Success Stories on the Power Play Blog, the first of which is this one. I hope you find them enjoyable!
Markus Frind, the entrepreneur behind Plentyoffish.com, is a noteworthy success story because he brought his own brand of marketing knowledge to an industry that was previously controlled by large businesses. In a Goliath vs. David scenario, the underdog ultimately prevails. In terms of pageviews, Markus is the leading "individual" adsense publisher. As he offers our readers some guidance, let's discover some of his secrets. Please feel free to comment!
Markus What computer programming experience do you have, and how did it help you prepare to become a webmaster?
For the past week, there have been about 14 million pageviews on average every day. Every day, users visit my website in excess of 80 million times, checking to see whether there are any new messages. Extremely high bandwidth usage!
I visit your website and see that the advertisements are specific to my area, even though I haven't registered. Could you tell our readers how you manage to achieve this?
Basically, I take your IP address, search it up in the database, and get the city information using ip2location.com. After that, I display a list of users in your city; this is not at all miraculous.
Are search engines (SERPS) the main source of your traffic, or are you noticing that they arrive from other sources? Do you regularly run media advertisements?
About 2% of my traffic comes from search engines. Like any other website with more than 5 million pageviews per day, the majority of my traffic originates from referrals and return visitors.
It appears that registrants on your site are not charged for the services they receive. Is this something you can accomplish because you have an advantage over your rivals?
I've created new algorithms that practically cost nothing, enabling me to build a massive website. I developed an algorithm a few years ago that could find a string of 22 prime integers thousands of times faster than the approach in use in the 1990s. In order to locate a record at the time, a professor employed hundreds of ordinary computers in addition to many supercomputers over a number of years. I spent two weeks doing the same thing on one computer.
Interesting! Does plentyoffish.com represent the only website you now manage, or are there any others?
Right now, it's the sole website. I registered a couple other sites for pals so they could learn affiliate marketing and other related skills. I now believe that one website is sufficient.
Do you have any advice for people who want to start a successful online business?
I would argue that what you are doing isn't a great idea if someone else believes it to be. Discover what matters to nobody else and create a highly trafficked website around it. Remember that websites with traffic but little monetization today might turn become future gold mines. In the realm of the internet, traffic is king, and everything will eventually be made profitable.
Markus, you have really great advice: "Traffic is King." One final query: How do you manage to keep up such a sizable online resource? You have to be interested in things other than programming and website maintenance, right?
While the labor only requires an hour a day on average, it is extremely taxing. The remaining couple of hours are spent reading and researching current events.
